Seven Sacred Pools, Maui

Maui’s Seven Sacred Pools

Found in the ʻOheʻo gulch and formed by the Palikea Stream, Maui’s “Seven Sacred Pools” at Kipahulu are a splendid sight.

Surprisingly, there are neither seven pools, nor are they truly sacred. Instead, the name was bestowed many years ago to drum up tourism by a local businessperson. Despite the misnomer, the pools, valley, river, and hiking trails are truly a wonderful place to visit.

This picture as taken near the bottom of the pools where the river meets the ocean on Maui’s eastern coastline. The waters here are turbulent and shark-filled, and signs abound encouraging visitors to stay ashore. The eastern-facing river offers fantastic sunrise views of both the ocean and the pools.

The pools are within Haleakala National Park. Most people get to the pools taking the Road to Hana and continuing on until reaching the Park.
