Hurricane Madeline from Kona

Here in Kailua-Kona, Hurricane Madeline passed without incident. We are thankful that on this leeward side of the Big Island the duo of 13,000+ ft peaks of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa act as a protective wall, keeping most westbound hurricanes from making landfall.

This image was taken on August 31, around 6:30pm from the Holualoa area. The weather was hot, sticky, and still.

As of the 31st at 11:00am, here’s what the prediction looked like:

EP142016W.0221

Fortunately, the storm followed the path of so many before it, heading south and missing the islands. While there was some flooding on the southeast part of the island, Hawaii County faired well.
