Pacific Golden Plover

A wintering Pacific Golden Plower, called ‘kolea’ in the Hawaiian language, walks along the shores of Hawaii.

The Pacific Plover migrates in all the way from the Arctic tundra in Asia and Alaska. This migration has given rise to the term ‘kolea’ meaning to come from afar, fatten up on Hawaii’s plenty, and then fly away.

It is a beautiful bird that spends just a few months in Hawaii each year.
