Steep pali (cliffs), lush from rain and tropical sun, plunge into the warm Pacific ocean below on the windward side of the Oahu coastline. Pictures like this one make it easy to think, “Yeah, I’d like to right there.”

Oahu is geologically older than most of the other islands in the Hawaii chain. Many years of waves, wind and rain have eroded the hillsides and valleys into occasionally steep droppoffs and ground the rock into fine, rich soil vibrant with life.

In the ocean pictured here, one can make out alternating swaths of dark and lighter blue. The lighter areas of sandy-bottom ocean while the darker areas are coral and rock reefs.
