On the island of Moloka’i you will find the offset village of Kalaupapa. This beautiful spot has an even more beautiful story.
Today Kalaupapa is looked on fondly as a place of healing for those who had skin diseases. However, when it was first instituted by King Kamehameha V in the 1800’s, it was a lost city of desperation and little hope where people were quarantined to die.
Seeing this desperation, a man called Father Damien settled on the peninsula and brought life-giving food and supplies. More than that, he helped raise awareness of their plight and earned ongoing help for generations to come.
From the Photographer:
“Truly an amazing experience reading and learning about Father Damien and his life’s dedication to those in Kalaupapa.”
