Deep contrasts of purple and green roll down a hillside of strongly scented lavender in late spring upcountry Maui.
Non-native to Hawaii, lavender has laid strong roots in the islands since its introduction as a profitable export. Lavender is now cultivated for gardens, oils, herbs, honey, and medicine.
In Maui, several-acre fields of lavender draw visitors throughout the year to experience the sights and smells it grows. Many of the species on island bloom fully in May and June, creating a vibrant palette on the cooler, upcountry hillsides.
