A Hawaiian Monk Seal relaxes in the clear-water shallows of Hawaii. The ancient Hawaiian phrase for Monk Seal is “llio holo I ka uaua,” which means “dog that runs in rough water.”

This is an apt phrase as these seals are known to be particularly playful and loyal to their favorite beaches.

There are fewer than 2,000 Hawaiian Monk Seals thought to be alive today.
