A red hibiscus adorns ocean-wet lava rock on the Big Island’s Kona shoreline.
Although the native yellow hibiscus is the official state flower, most of the other hibiscus varieties found throughout the islands are still closely associated with Hawaii in people’s hearts. Red, one of the main colors associated with royalty and the Ali’i (ruling class), can be found in several locally found types of hibiscus.
This beauty was found near the shore in Kailua Kona.
