One of Hawaii’s most beautiful and least visited places is the well-manicured Hawaii Tropical Botanical Gardens on the windward side of the Big Island. A once over-grown valley was transformed over a couple of decades by a few dedicated volunteers and staff to become an ever-flowering tropical paradise.
These beautiful purple orchids stand tall near an old-fashioned stone well, complete with bucket and hoist. The orchids here seem to always be in bloom and offer a spectacular representation of a few of the species that grow well in Hawaii’s windward (wetter) areas.
In these areas orchids grow from the ground, on rock walls, or in the crooks of tree limbs.
