Near the edge of the Halema’uma’u caldera, this picture shows a desolate, seemingly other-worldly landscape. In the true nature of Hawaii, this is juxtaposed with a rainbow–symbol of hope and renewal–demonstrating the extreme differences this small island possesses.

Hawaii’s Big Island has 11 of the world’s 13 climate zones. Nowhere is this clearer than in Hawaii Volcano National Park. Here, barren rock surrounding active volcano craters gives way to dense foliage upcountry and tropical plants toward the ocean.
