A Pacific Golden Plover looks for food on a Maui beach wearing its winter colors of brown and yellow. Called, “Kolea” in Hawaiian, the bird’s name has been known as, “…a scornful reference to foreigners (Kel. 70) who come to Hawaii and become prosperous, and then leave with their wealth, just as the plover arrives thin in the fall each year, fattens up, and leaves.”1

The Kolea visit Hawaii starting around August and stay as late as May.
