Looking uphill from Makawao (ma-ka-wow) toward Haleakala summit on the island of Maui, a double rainbow appears in partly stormy skies, creating a virtual canvas of blue and green below the lower rainbow. The Hawaiian language has several words for different kinds of rainbows, but are often called “anuenue.”
The moon completes this heavenly image as it peeks in on the scene just to the right of the more vibrant rainbow.
Makawao is located in Maui’s “upcountry” where it is much cooler than on the hot beaches below. Up here the air is dry and crisp and evergreen trees are seen instead of palms.
