Aside Mauna Loa volcano on Hawaii’s Big Isand, a single, black-on-black road disappears over a hill miles away in a study of perspective and horizon lines. The barren terrain clearly and quickly relates the history of the area as a recently active volcanic field.
Undeterred by the a’a and pahoehoe lava, builders laid a winding road into the otherwise uniform palette, providing access to Mauna Loa Observatory. In Hawaiian “ala loa” translates as, “long road,” which we felt was appropriate here.

Looking down the Mauna Loa Observatory Road. This section of the long road to the Mauna Loa Observatory is closest to the observatory and the safest portion.
