Big Island Hula Dancing

Hula No Ka ‘Oi!

Hawaiian hula dancers in traditional royal colors perform on grounds in Kailua-Kona on Hawaii’s Big Island. Hula’s welcomed resurgence in the last century has led to hula halau (groups) all over the world, performing dances representing many Polynesian cultures each with their own unique style and music.

In hula, stories are told with hands and feet, with all movements representing elements in the story. The dance helps us to remember the story and pass it on to future generations.

In Hawaii, Hula now culminates in an annual event on the Big Island in Hilo at the Merry Monarch Festival. Performers from countries near and far gather for the largest hula competition in the world. Male and female dancers perform traditional and new dances to the crowds delight.
