Starry Night

The Milky Way appears in the night sky over the island of Oahu as a doorway being cracked open. Peering into the universe from Hawaii reminds us both of how isolated we are and how much a part of everything we are.

This 30-second exposure shows just how clear the skies above Hawaii can be and why two of its islands are home to some of the most powerful telescopes and astronomical equipment in the world.

From the photographer:

“The Milky Way is the galaxy that contains our Solar System. This name derives from its appearance as a dim “milky” glowing band arching across the night sky, in which the naked eye cannot distinguish individual stars.”
