A Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle, called “honu,” floats serenely through the sandy shallows off the Maui coastline as light cascades down in streams from above painting a mosaic on the sea floor as the background fades to colors of teal.
The clarity of the water here makes the turtle appear to be flying through the air. This picture has been retouched with HDR for added effect, bringing out the shadows that dance on the turtle’s shell and face.
Honu have rebounded well in the Hawaiian islands and there are now healthy populations throughout the state. They are enjoyed day and night by snorkelers, divers, and those who catch a glimpse of them from the shore.
