Imagine floating in calm ocean waters, eagerly peering into the dark depths with a few underwater torches drawing the attention of what you are after–giant rays up to three times your size.
The rays dazzle you with a silent, smooth ballet, flying through the water. They bank and turn toward you, then just before making contact, they perform a giant loop like an amusement park roller coaster.
Perhaps that thought is why manta ray night diving and snorkeling is one of the most sought-after activities on the Kona coast of Hawaii’s Big Island.
From the Photographer:
“Night Time Manta Ray adventure photo taken from above in a helicopter with Paradise Helicopters. Thanks to Splashers Ocean Adventures for hiring me take the photo.”
How many rays can you see in this shot? We spot three.
