Moon Over Volcano

Moon Over Volcano

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is a place of wonder–the power of the volcano, new land created before your eyes, extremes of land and vegetation, storied past, and more.

This silhouette of a tree was taken on the rugged surface of an older lava flow with the park. As time has worn down the lava, this tree found enough soil to take root, along with a few small grasses. The moonrise was closely followed by the sunset, which is truly dark on an isolated lava flow.
