Makena Shorebreak, Maui

Makena Shorebreak

Heads up when the surf is high at Makena Beach Park on Maui’s south side. Due to its underwater topography, unimpeded southern swells crash directly on the sandy shore of this beach.

When the swell is small to moderate it makes for some of the best boogie boarding and body surfing on the island. When the swell is big though, it makes for dangerous, bone-breaking, and beautiful conditions.

Like watching a fire flicker, we can stare into the waves here without tiring of it. Being able to see into the ocean from inside of a wave’s curl is one of life’s small but glorious rewards.
