Kailua Kona Outrigger

Kona Wa’a

Just off the shores of Kailua-Kona on Hawaii’s Big Island a crew of paddlers take their six-man outrigger canoe (wa’a) out for sunset practice.

Canoeing is the most popular sport in Hawaii with thousands of participants. Kona evenings often see teams of paddlers practicing from Kamakahonu Bay and Keauhou Bay, two of the main outrigger club births.

There is only a horizontal sliver of the sun still seen above an invisible line of clouds. It lends just enough light to let the crew see until they come ashore after their hour-long work out.
