We have featured the oft photographed Kilauea Lighthouse before, but we really enjoy this close up picture of the lighthouse tower beacon in HDR, which reveals its size and texture.
We get a sense of motion as blurred clouds pass by in the background, bringing the red metal of the lighthouse into sharp relief. Through reflections in the well-cleaned glass, you can just make out the inner light that warns ships to keep a safe distance from this most northern point on Kauai.
Like most lighthouses in the world today, it was converted to be automated some time ago. This closer up shot helps give a perspective on the size of the lighthouse and the huge size of the beacon inside, showing the maintenance door through which workers keep the glass as clean as possible.
