Kehena Beach Hawaii

Kehena Beach, Big Island

Breathtaking black sand Kehena Beach catches the first rays of sun as day breaks on the east side of Hawaii’s Big Island. Near quaint and unique Pahoa town, this “clothing optional” beach has been described as “ridiculous beautiful” and “an off the wall hippy hangout.”

Known for its strong history of nudity, drum circles, and generally counter-cultural ways, beach-goers are more or less left to their own devices at Kehena. Getting to the beach requires a steep descent from the roadside to the beach on a narrow path. The reward is spending time with views like this one. Later in the day, the same view is still beautiful, although filled with frolicking folks.

This nice sunrise shot demonstrates the beauty of the place, surrounded by scrub trees, black sands, and constantly rolling shore breaks.
