Hawaiian Sea Turtle

Hello, Hawaiian Sea Turtle

Something about sea turtles tugs at our hearts. It may be that we’ve seen one too many Disney or Pixar movies or that all those ‘save the planet’ speeches have gotten to us. Whatever the reason, sea turtles are easy to admire–some many even say befriend.

Hawaiian sea turtles were nearing a deadly end not so long ago when over-hunting and other practices brought their numbers to near catastrophic levels. Since the passage of protective laws, sea turtles in Hawaii have rebounded. Today you can find these fun creatures on all of Hawaii’s islands and in largish number.

This exceptional photo taken in the waters off the Mauna Kea resort area on Hawaii’s Big Island comes from photographer Steve Nelson. The picture was taken while snorkeling the clear Kona coast waters near the Waikoloa area.
