At Kamakana Playground on Hawaii’s Big Island, a wood carving of an ancient Hawaiian surfing inspires children with the phrase he’e nalua, which means “surfing” in English. This intricate piece of art is carved into treated 2 x 8 wood, hoping to stand the test of time…and children with interested hands.
The rest of this large playground located within Higashihara Park is covered with similar carvings, giving the park a detailed, unique feel that surpasses more typical playgrounds.
