The most southern point in the United States is South Point, Big Island Hawaii. Marked by high winds and tumultuous seas, gnarly spraying waves hit the shore as a rain storm drenches the pacific in the background. Although hard to tell by perspective, this wave face is about 10 feet tall, combining the power of swells from the east, west, and south as they converge here.
The currents here are strong and it is said that if one gets into trouble–as many old Hawaiian stories tell–you will be lost at sea, finally reappearing in the Antarctic, with no land to speak of between here and there.
South Point is also known for its great fishing as currents, sudden depths, and schools of larger reef fish bring pelagic fish within fishing pole distance.
