Puna Coast

On the east side of Hawaii’s Big Island is the district of Puna, known for rugged coastline, frequent volcanic activity, and not-so-mainstream lifestyles.

Due to the frequent volcanic flows and shape of Mauna Loa, this section of Hawaii has some of the flattest expanses in the state. Being on the windward side means that many places in Puna rack up huge amounts of rainfall. These two factors combined fill Puna with forests, cutting down the line of sight afforded other parts of the island.

So, to see the ocean here, one has to get to the coast. Once there, you will be rewarded with wide views, rugged paths, and quiet solitude.
