Blue-striped snapper was introduced to the Hawaiian islands, in addition to many other places, as a food fish. Unfortunately, the species has become invasive and negatively affects some reefs and other populations of native fish. To that end, the snapper is heavily hunted by fisherman and even specifically targeted by spearfisherman during annual events to reduce invasive species numbers.
Aside from their invasive nature in Hawaiian waters, they are still a beautiful shallow water fish enjoyed by many snorkelers and divers…and evening diners at many local restaurants and homes.
