Pololu Awini Trail, Hawaii

Pololu Valley, Awini Trail

The green pali (cliffs) of Pololu Valley and North Kohala rise high above the blue see and smooth-stone beach on the Awini Trail on Hawaii’s Big Island. Awini Trail is a section of Old Government road that is now a combination of sand and cobblestone leading 1 mile down the 420 foot high cliffside. From the shoreline, the trail continues east for several miles, toward the Waipio Valley.

At one time it was inhabited but tsunamis over the years have proved too devastating for anyone to build there again. Besides being beautiful, this spot is also great for camping and for surfing when the swell is right.

The trail is accessible by parking at the top of the Pololu Lookout at the end of highway 270.
