Haleakala Sunset, Maui
Photograph by Hawaii Picture of the Day
Haleakala in the Hawaiian language means “house of the sun,” an apt description for the highest peak on Maui that catches the last of the island’s sun each day.
At over 13,000 feet above sea level, the air is thin and clear, offering spectacular views of Maui and its neighboring islands, often from above the clouds.
If you plan to enjoy a Haleakala sunset, be sure to pack warm–the temperatures here often approach freezing.
