Cat’s Whiskers

Cat’s Whiskers, Orthosiphon stamineus, look sun-ward on the island of Hawaii, revealing purple highlights on their tips.

In addition to looking great, the flowers attract butterflies and bees with large amounts of nectar. The plant takes up a couple of feet as a shrub and so is used mostly in larger landscaping projects in Hawaii.

These pretty flowers were originally from tropical East Asia. Related to mint, Cat’s Whiskers are used to make Java Tea, which is sometimes used to help pass kidney stones.
