Humpback Whale Breaching

Breaching Humpback Whale

There’s nothing quite like seeing a breaching Humpback whale in Hawaii’s waters.

These warm-blooded mammals migrate to Hawaii’s warm oceans each year to give birth to their babies and mate for next year’s. As big as a school bus, Humpback whales are strong enough to propel themselves entirely out of the water.

No one knows for sure why humpbacks and other whales breach…some say it is to scratch an itch, others say it is to build strength, and yet others say it is to communicate something to other humpbacks nearby. Or, it could just be for good old-fashioned fun.
