Big Beach Panoramic, Maui

Big Beach, Maui

Inside Makena Beach State Park’s 160 acres of beautiful grounds, you will find “Big Beach,” so called because it is…well, big–at least for Maui standards. With its size and location in South Maui, you are likely to always be able to find space on the sand away from any crowd here.

This white sand beach stretches for a couple miles along the coastline and is wider than many beaches on Maui. Big Beach sits at the base of Pu‘u Ola‘i cinder cone, which roughly divides the park in two with Little Beach on one side and Big Beach on the other.

The Park itself is found just south of the beautiful tourist town of Wailea and the more local town of Kihei. When the swell is right the waves here can be large and dangerous, breaking right on the shore. In this times it is a playground for experienced boogie boarders and skim boarders, who provide acrobatic entertainment for everyone on the beach.
