Extremely common to Hawaii, the Naupaka Kahakai (beach naupaka), is one of eight Hawaiian naupaka species.
This plant produces pretty, white, half flowers appearing to be only the lower half of a full flower. The upper half appears in the mountain nuapaka species. This fact gives rise to legends and stories of separated lovers waiting to be reunited.
Perhaps less known, the sap of the plant is used by divers and snorkelers to keep their goggles from fogging over during dives.
