We may not have Aurora Borealis in Hawaii, but we do have an unfettered view into the Milky Way and the cosmos bordered only by the Pacific horizon. Being more than 2000 miles from the nearest large body of land, having the right weather conditions, and keeping light pollution to a minimum in many places on the islands, Hawaii is ideal for stargazing.
In fact, these reasons, among others, led scientists from several international governments to build some of the most sophisticated observatories on the planet atop Mauna Kea on the Big Island and Haleakala on Maui. While many people don’t come to Hawaii for the express purpose of stargazing, we highly recommend taking the opportunity to get away and look to the heavens.
