Waimanalo Beach Park

Makapu’u Beach

It is a beautiful view from the point overlooking Makapuu Beach, the Makai Pier, and in the distance Waimanalo Bay State Recreation Area on Oahu.

This shallow section of ocean is only about 20 feet deep a quarter mile off shore, as opposed to much steeper sections on much of the island.  Perhaps in contradiction to the shallow waters, this is known as a whale sanctuary and is one of the annual Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary counting locations.

Being on the southeast/windward side of Oahu, the water is often choppy and a little windblown here with smaller swells than the north shore. The surrounding area’s lushness and close proximity to Kailua town make it a popular sight.
