Waialea Beach, Big Island

Waialea Beach, known as “Beach 69” locally, is one of the most beautiful beaches on the west side of the Big Island. Filled with soft sand, more shade than many beaches, and accessible ocean, this is one of our favorites.

Waialea is called Beach 69 because it is found by turning oceanward just after the HWY 19 mile marker 69, near the small town of Puako.

When the surf is up, Waialea has a nice break, however it is shallow and demands caution and a knowledge of this spot. The shoreline is a mix of soft sand and lava rock outcroppings. Snorkeling can be fun, as can occasional boogie boarding.
